Interpretation

Commentary

This is an exceptionally well-preserved inscription, owing to the fact that it had been part of a structure, thus protecting it from the elements over the millennia. It is an elaborate vengeance inscription, documenting further conflict with the tribe of Ṭayyiʾ, whose territory lies further south near Ḥāʾil in KSA.

dm, dmy: This is a singular-plural pair of the word 'blood', thus /dam/ and /demāy/, cf. Classical Arabic dimāʾ-.

s²ʿ: This appears to be a singular form, but the use of the plural dmy before it suggests that it should be construed as a variant of the more common plural, ʾs²yʿ.

ġr bʾs¹: The first element is likely a nominal form, cognate with Classical Arabic ġarra 'to deceive' (Lane, 2237), here likely referring to a plot or stratagem carried out by the Ṭayyiʾ. Bʾs¹ is thus construed as an adjective, baʾīs.
