Translation: By {Hʿbd} son of Ms²ʿr and he camped here {the year} {Ṣmd} laid siege to the dwellings of the {ʾs¹kn} of the ʾl Dʾf and he mourned for Ms²ʿr and for Ḥy [who] was killed, and O Lt vengeance on whosoever committed [this act].

Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus: C 777: {w{ l{t} ḥṯ{r} [w] {w}gd h- bt s¹kn ʾl dʾf "and Lt increase and he found this small dwelling settlement of the ʾl Dʾf" Macdonald, Al Muʾazzin & Nehmé 1996: 462 and n. 68: s¹nt ḥ(ṣ){r} s¹md bt (ʾ)s¹kn ʾl dʾf "the year Ṣmd laid siege to the ʾs¹kn of the ʾl Dʾf"
Commentary: Compare BRenv.B 1 by a member of the ʾl dʾf : s¹nt kbs¹ ʾl lḥyn h- ʾs¹kn "the year the ʾl Lḥyn made a sudden attack on the ʾs¹kn".

Provenance: We have not been able to identify this site with any certainty. According to C (p. 91), it is about 30 km west of Ruǧm al-Marʾah. The co-ordinates we have given it are therefore taken from a point 30 km due west of Ruǧm al-Marʾah, but this can only be a very approximate position. Note that this site is not the same as Ḥuǧayr al-Helle, where C 2 was found, which is on the north-western edge of the Ṣafā.
