- Translation
- By Mʿṣ and he withstood the ms¹{g}ḥt but then he was captured {and so} he returned to permanent water in an emaciated state
Interpretation
- Apparatus Criticus
- SIT: gʿṣ for mʿṣ; h- mrgḥt for h- mbgḥt; translated from w ws¹q as "and he drove the camels. So he escaped and returned and he became lean". CEDS 74: l mʿṣ w ws¹q h mbgḥt f ʾnqḏ f ṣyr w ḫs¹f. JMAA VIII p. 7: gnṣ for mʿṣ; ws¹q "to gather"; ʾnqḏ "he was rescued"; ṣyr "to migrate"; ḫs¹f cf. C 3064 translated in JSM p. 507. H unp.: w ws¹q h mrgḥt "And he drove the camels which had a quivering motion in going along with short steps" or "He withstood the heavily armed men".
- Commentary
- Ws¹q can mean "he struggled (with)", "he fought" or "he withstood". It is difficult to interpret ms¹{g}ḥt. The translation of the words f ṣyr w ḫs¹f is based on that in Al-Jallad & Jaworska s.v. ḫsf.
