Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus
TEXT Line 2. Abū l-Ḥasan does not restored [ḏ] at the end of this line, but does so in the translation.
Commentary
Line 4. On the photograph one could read read ʿld rather than wld. We believe that the carver of the inscription incised ʿld for wld by mistake. The reading of this word as ʿld (cf. Arabic ʿalida ' to become strong and hard' (Lane 1863–1893: 2129b)) does not provide any sense appropriate to this text. A personal name with this form is also unattested. The word wld could also be a personal name which is attested in Minaic and Safaitic (Ryckmans, G. 1934–1935: 78–79; Harding 1971: 649). Due to the poor condition of the stone — the upper and left sides are broken — it is difficult to provide a reasonable interpretation of the first lines of this text.
