- TEXT Jaussen & Savignac: mrm for grm; Winnett: grg rather than grm. Grimme followed by Winnett: hnmr rather than hzmr. TRANSLATION ḏ, Jaussen & Savignac: second one as relative pronoun. Grimme: exclamation particle. DISCUSSION Ryckmans, G. 1937: 327. Déroche 1987: 108. Macdonald 2004: 509: for ḏ as an apotropaic sign.
- Commentary
- Caskel (1954: 95-96) mistakenly identified CLL 036 as JSLih 284, but it should be JSLih 124. The ḏ at each end of the text is probably an apotropaic abbreviation of the divine name ḏ-ġbt. The text is repeated in a less formal letter shapes in Jabal al-Ḫuraybah 1. For the interpretation of the word zmr cf. Arabic zammār "a flute player" (Lane 1250c) or player upon a mizmār "a double reed-pipe" (Lane 1251a). This would seem to be what the instrument was since in the drawing accompanying HCH 79 a woman playing a double flute is described as zmrt (cf. Arabic zåmirah, Lane 1250c).
