Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus
TEXT Line 2. Sima: mʿs² for mʿn. Line 3. Abū l-Ḥasan: ʾṭll ʿn for ʾẓll ʿ and s¹lʿ for s¹mʿ; Sima does not read the end of this line. Line 4. Abū l-Ḥasan: (w ʿn) rather than ḥy; Sima does not read the beginning of this line. TRANSLATION Line 3. ʾẓll, Sima: '(he) covered ----'. DISCUSSION Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2014: 19–20, for the place name Ḏʿmn.
Commentary
Line 3. After ʾẓll, there is a ʿ between word-dividers for which we have no explanation. The inscription is difficult to interpret from a linguistic point-of-view. The invocatory formula is not placed at the end of the text. The verb ʾẓll means "he performed the ẓll-ceremony", the exact nature of which we do not know. Usually, but not always, this verb is followed by the noun h-ẓll meaning "the ẓll-ceremony". Thus, ʾẓll and ʾẓll h-ẓll both mean "he performed the ẓll-ceremony". Line 4. ḥy could be interpreted as a personal name or be used as a name of the palm garden.

Provenance
Al-ʿUḏayb (Jabal ʿIkmah). The inscription is chiselled on a rock inside the gorge
