Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus: TEXT Line 1. Altheim and Stiel: whb zl rather than whbʾl; Sima does not read the h at the end of the line. Lines 1–2. Al-Qudrah: whb zlts²bn rather than whbl h- tṣbr, and ẓll for ʾẓll, which he considers to be a substantive. Altheim and Stiehl read only the first three lines. Line 5. Sima does not read this line. TRANSLATION Lines 1–2. Sima treats tṣbr as a lineage name. Thus, he translates 'of the family of N'. Lines 1–3. Altheim and Stiehl: 'he gave Zillat-Ṣabn an awning of ḏū-Ġābat'. Lines 2–3. ʾẓll, Sima: '(he) covered (the subterranean water-channel)'. DISCUSSION Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2016: 128, for the divine name Ḏġbt.
Commentary: The inscription is badly incised. Lines 2–3. The verb ʾẓll means "he performed the ẓll-ceremony", the exact nature of which we do not know. Usually, but not always, this verb is followed by the noun h-ẓll meaning "the ẓll-ceremony". Thus, ʾẓll and ʾẓll h-ẓll both mean "he performed the ẓll-ceremony". Line 4. Below this line there are four letters which appear to read {w}ʾd{b}. It is not certain what these signify or whether they are part of this text. The phrase f rḍ -h in these texts is normally followed by w s¹ʿd -h or w ʾḫrt -h or both. Line 5. This line does not seem to belong to this inscription, nor even to any of the neighbouring inscriptions.
