- TEXT Line 2. Abū l-Ḥasan: h- ṭll for h- ẓll. Line 4. Stiehl followed by Al-Qudrah and Farès-Drappeau considered the incised w on the piece of rock immediately after w ʾḫrt -h as part of this text and read w kll -h. However, "and his posterity and all of him/it" makes no sense and is anyway never found in these contexts where the expression is always w ʾḫrt -h kll -h "his posterity all of it", i.e. "all his descendants". Moreover, it is clear from the photograph that not only is a w inscribed on this piece of rock but the letters r [word-divider] w, which would have no place in line 4 of U 010. TRANSLATION Line 2. h- ẓll, Stiehl: 'the awning'; Al-Qudrah: 'the awning'; Sima: 'the subterranean water-channel'; Line 3. b -khl, Stiehl followed by Sima: 'by his abilities'; Al-Qudrah: 'professionally'; Abū l-Ḥasan: 'in the month Khl'; bʿd, Sima: 'in the direction of'; Farès-Drappeau: 'on behalf of'; ml -h, Farès-Drappeau: 'his winter harvest'. Line 4. ʾḫrt -h, Farès-Drappeau: 'he has guided him'. DISCUSSION Macdonald 2004: 512. Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2014: 18, 20–22, for the place names Ṯr and Khl. Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2016: 128, for the divine name Ḏġbt.
- Commentary
- The inscription is in relief. It is clear from the arrangement of the ends of the lines of U 010 that U 016, to the left of it, was incised first, since lines 1 and 3 of U 010 have been made shorter than line 2 to avoid encroaching on U 016. Possibly because part of the rock face was already broken, the carver of U 016 started the final line further to the right than the others and it can be seen that the carver of U 010 left this piece of the rock intact and completed his text (line 5) below the beginning of line 4.
