Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus: TEXT Line 1. Jaussen & Savignac followed by van den Branden: bn ʿbd for [sign] b db; Eskoubi: ʾḫwb rather than ʾs²{w}b. TRANSLATION Line 1. b dblḥd, Eskoubi: 'son of Db son of Lḥd'; Kootstra: 'son of d(?) son of lḥd'. Line 2. Jaussen & Savignac: 'Ḥulayl to Dadan'.
Commentary: Jaussen & Savignac (1909–1920, ii: 585–586), followed by van den Branden 1950: 270–271, read this as two separate texts but Eskoubi's photograph shows that it is one text carved boustrophedon. We have read the vertical line and dot after the first name as a sign, followed by b “son of” and the patronym and a verb. There are horizontal lines above the {w} + sign and two parallel horizontal lines over b db. The last two letters have been slightly damaged by an outline drawing of a camel.

Associated Signs: (1). A sign consisting of a Taymanitic b followed (L-R) by a straight vertical line and a dot seems to occur between the first name and the b.; (2). A sign consisting of a vertical line with a “V” resting on the top, and diagonal lines rising to the right from the base and from half-way up stands just before the beginning of the text. (3). A sign consisting of a vertical line with a pair of upward diagonals at the base (with a dot above the right one) and half-way up the stem and a short horizontal cross bar just below the top. (4). To the left of (3) and above the parallel horizontal lines over bd, a vertical line + a dot.
