Interpretation

Commentary
The name of the author's great-grandfather runs below the inscription, reading bn gml. The two inscriptions are clearly of different techniques (it is incised rather than chiselled). bn gml seems to have been placed below the rest of the text as there was more space there than immediately after lfʾt and is contained within the cartouche. lfʾt: At the time of writing, the name has only been firmly attested once in Safaitic (WH 2723; possible attestation in BSHH 563). The name rfʾt is much more common. A genealogy of mlkt bn bḥrmh bn rfʾt is known from AWS 88 and mlkt bn bḥrmh bn rfʾt bn gml from SSWS 33. The photograph does not seem to show the hooks of a r, so has been interpreted as a l. As AWS88 and SSWS 33 are only known from hand copies, we would tentatively suggest that this could be the same genealogy.
