Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus
Al-Jallad 2015: 277: w ḥḍr b- ʾẓmy h lt w h ḏs²r lʿn ḥwlt hḏ ʾṯm w wgm ʿl- ṯrm f h lt w y ḏs²r f h ds²r m ẓlm ms¹k f bqr "and he camped by permanent water near ʾẓmy; O Lt and O Ḏs²r curse the Hwlt-ites who acted wrongfully, and he grieved for Ṯrm, so, O Lt and O Ḏs²r, and even Ds²r , whosever would/has oppress(ed) Ms¹k, split him in two".
Commentary
The curious phase ḥwlt hḏ ʾṯm is explained by Al-Jallad (2015: 88). While y ḏs²r is possible (Al-Jallad 2015: 159) the photograph, which was not available to Al-Jallad, shows that the supposed y is damaged and could in fact be either a h or a y. Note that after the second ḏs²r the following f is inside the r and the divine name read as ds²r in the editio princeps and Al-Jallad 2015: 197, 277, is actually s²dr in the original, though this may well be a mistake for ds²r. We cannot find a satisfactory interpretation for the final words of the text.
