Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus
WH [working only form a hand-copy]: l ʿlyb bn ḥn [bn] ẓʿb bn ʿdd ḏ- ʾl .ʾm w rʿy b-ḫmt s²nt ngy lḥg ryt [or kyt] f h ds²r s¹lm w ḥgr. "By ʿlyb b. Ḥun [b.] ẓʿb b. ʿdd of the tribe of .ʾm. he pastured BḪ˜Ṭ the year that Laḥg rescued Ryt [or: Kyt]. And so O Dū-Šarā, [grant] security and protection."
Commentary
The text was rediscovered and photographed in the 2023 season of BES. The n of the first bn is hidden by a chip in the rock, while what should be the second bn looks more like a Nabataean br (!) if one ignores the flourish near the end of the top horizontal bar. However, it is difficult to imagine that anything but bn was intended. The first two letters of the lineage name are difficult to read with any certainly but seem to be ls¹. The word ḥgryt has not been found before but may mean a land full of stones such as the ḥarrah (cf. Arabic ʾrḍ ḥaǧirah, Lane 518). Given, the location of this inscription on the border of the ḥarrah and the ḥamād this would suggest that the author had been living in the ḥamād but for some reason had had to escape to the ḥarrah where he was not happy.
