MHED p. 285: discussion of yhdy. MNH p. 314 n. 70 and 72: w ġzy b- nmrt - and he raided at Namārah.
Commentary
At the beginning of the narrative, what was previously read as w ġzy b-nmrt "and he raided at Nmrt" is problematic. Firstly, the word which is ġazā "to raid" in Classical Arabic, is always ġzz in Safaitic (in the one other text where ġzy is supposed to have been found, KhBG 11 the crucial letter is invisible on the photograph). The first letter of the word formerly read as ġzy could be a s², though admittedly is different from that in the second name, and the next letter could be a misshapen t. Al-Namārah always has the definite article in Safaitic (as in Arabic), and for this reason we have restored it here. Given all these uncertainties, this reading of the narrative is offered tentatively.
