Interpretation

Commentary: The theophoric name ʿbds¹mʿ is new in Hismaic. The second element should probably be understood as the adjective samīʿ 'knowing' or 'hearing', referring to the deity as one who will hear and respond to prayers. The invocation s¹mʿ + divine name 'may the divinity give ear' is attested in the ANA inscriptions, as it is in later Islamic liturgical formulae: samiʿa llāhu li-man ḥamida 'May Allāh give ear to those who offer praise'. The final word of the inscription, ṣḥbt, could be compared to Classical Arabic ṣaḥābatun 'companions', and in this context would be an alternative to the common prayer: ḏkrt lt ʾs²yʿ-n 'may Lt be mindful of our companions'.
