Commentary

While the name Rmḥt occurs in other inscriptions, this is the first occurrence of the name Mnṭq. Indeed, this is the first occurrence of the root nṭq, which is well-attested in Classical Arabic. Ibn Manẓūr lists takallama "to speak" as a synonym of the verb naṭaqa. With the mīm prefix, as here, the meaning is "speech" or, by extension, "one who speaks well." Manṭiq comes to mean "logic" in Classical Arabic, perhaps as a calque of the Greek lōgikē from lōgōs "word" (R. Arnaldez, "Manṭiḳ," in Encyclopaedia of Islam New Edition Online, edited by P. Bearman).
