Interpretation
- Commentary
- The inscription is clear on the stone but relatively difficult to make clear sense of. The letter read as a y in rʾy, looks very much like a ṣ, if one reads the adjoining circle as an ʿ. Additionally, it may be a d, if the lightly scratched circle at the top of the letter is extraneous. The s¹ of s¹fr appears as though it is made up of two separate letters, connected with a short diagonal line. Nevertheless, in the context, it seems almost certain that this is an s¹. Following s¹fr, there seems to be a l followed immediately by a w. If the reading is correct, one would expect a pronoun (h), referring back to ʿn. Josef Bloomfield
