Interpretation

Commentary: The inscription is concealed by damage and the shapes of the letters are very ambiguous. The end of the inscription seems to be a prayer to the deity Rḍw to provide something, perhaps protection, security etc, to the author’s ‘people’, perhaps family or tribe. Typically the noun is ʾns¹, but as in Classical Arabic where ʾanasah can have the same meaning as ʾunas (Lane 114.c), the interpretation here assumes the same is true in the inscription. One must note that the reading of ʾns¹t is very tentative. The first letter, read as ʾ, appears to be a straight vertical line, with a fainter shape, perhaps forming the letters arms, on the left. The apparent s¹ has a more heavily hammered section that resembles a y, but two faint lines coming from the top that turn the letter into a V-shape. Josef Bloomfield
