Interpretation
- Commentary
- This inscription is difficult to make sense of due to the previously unattested name ʿṭlwn and the final word s¹kry. The first letter of the word is partially covered by damage and there appears to be a small hook at the top, giving it the appearance of a k. Nevertheless, the hook at the top seems to be part of the damage, rather than an intentional mark. The reading here assumes that s¹kry corresponds to the Classical Arabic root SKR, perhaps sukarā, a drunkard (Lisan al-ʿArab 2047.b). An alternative possibility is that s¹kr refers to an unattested lineage group. Josef Bloomfield
