Interpretation
- Commentary
- Unfortunately, there is no photograph of the end of the inscription. The “Jews” here may refer to the armies of the states of the Ḥawrān (Batanaea [between Mt Hermon and Gilead], Trachonitis [Leǧāʾ], Auranitis [Ḥawrān], Gaulanitis [Golan], Panias [by the source of the Jordan], and possible Ituraea [in Lebanon]) which were “given” to Herod the Great by Augustus and over which Herod’s son Philip (4 BC – AD 33/4) ruled.
