Interpretation

Commentary

The inscriptoin is carved on a loose stone, found near a trilith.

s³ḥbn: This name is unattested in ANA but the root is attested in Ancient South Arabian meaning 'to ruin', or 'to pull, drag' in Arabic.

mṭy: Mṭy is an extremely common name in ANA, attested some 78 times already in OCIANA. It derives from the root mṭy, meaning to journey on a beast.

l-hl: The meaning of this sequence is provisional for now. The present context could suggest that it introduces a lineage name. If so, then hl could be a reflex of ʾahl- 'family' with the loss of the glottal stop, preceded by the dative preposition.

s²kd: If the above reading is correct, then s²kd would be a family name. The root in Arabic means 'to give (a gift)' (Lane, 1583c-1584), compare with the common name wahb, with the same meaning.
