Interpretation

Commentary

This inscription seems to have been written after the Script 1a text painted on the same panel. It attests the common nk formula, which allows for a preliminary translation: 'Rḥkm and he had sex with Hls1m.’

nk: This is a 3rd masculine singular suffix conjugated verb meaning 'to have sex', and is attested in Safaitic, Hismaic, and in Thamudic D as both nyk and nk

It is also possible to interpret the following h a clitic pronoun referring back to rḥkm. In this case, the subject of the verb would be a man called Ls1m. Though neither name is attested, both can be derived from known Arabic roots. More likely, however, is that Rḥkm is the subject of the verb nk and Hls¹m its direct object. Both names would then terminate in mimation.
