Interpretation

Commentary

In this inscription, Script 1a is used horizontally from left to right. Other instances of Script 1a in a horizontal stance are Shahri 1, KMGH 11 and DhI 4. It is possible that these are simply two personal names. However, their meanings form a coherent phrase so we have given a maximal interpretation along these lines.

mrr: This term is linked to the root √mrr 'to pass, to be bitter' which yields cognates in several Semitic language (Leslau 1987: 360). This form could be interpreted as an active participle or verb.

drb: A likely cognate of Arabic darb 'road, path' (Lane 866).

It is possible to read the inscription in reverse producing br drrm 'son of Drrm'. However, this is unlikely as it would be strange for a text to begin with the patronymic.
