Interpretation

Commentary

ʾs¹d: A common Arabic name, ʾasad, 'lion.'

ʿyA common name in Safaitic, attested some 24 times. It is likely derived from the root ʿwy (cf. muʿāwiyah), yeilding ʿayy (<*ʿawy-).

mtʿ: A common Arabian name, 'pleasure', also found as a component of theophoric names, e.g. mtʿʾl.

byn: The absence of the word bn before this word suggests that it is a tribal name introduced by the relative pronoun without a term for 'tribe' or 'family'. As such byn would be a tribal name. Byn, likely bayān, is attested some ten times as an athroponym in Safaitic. Other Thamudic D inscriptions from further north attest the common north Arabian construction ḏ ʾl (Al-Jallad 2025b).
