- TEXT Line 1. Abū l-Ḥasan followed by Farès-Drappeau: rynh rather than qynh. They also do not read the last letters of this line. Line 2. Abū l-Ḥasan: ʾṭll h- ṭll for ʾẓll h- ẓll. Line 5. This line is not read by Abū l-Ḥasan followed by Farès-Drappeau; Sima: w s¹ʿd -h for w ----ʿ---- h. TRANSLATION Lines 1–2. Sima, followed by Farès-Drappeau, treats the second name in the double name as a lineage name. Thus, he translates 'of the family of N'. Line 2. ʾẓll h- ẓll, Sima: '(he) covered the subterranean water-channel'; Farès-Drappeau: '(he) offered the sacrifice'. Line 3. b- khl, Abū l-Ḥasan: 'in the month Khl'; Sima: 'by his abilities'; bʿd h- ʿrḍ, Sima: 'in the direction of the mountain slope'; Farès-Drappeau: 'on behalf of the ʿrḍ'; h- ʿrḍ, Abū l-Ḥasan: 'possessions'. DISCUSSION Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2014: 15–16, 20–22, for the place names Bdr and Khl. Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2016: 128, for the divine name Ḏġbt.
- Commentary
- Line 4. For ʿrḍ compare Arabic ʿirḍ 'the side of a valley', 'a valley’, 'the low ground of a settled area', 'a valley in which there are many palm trees' (Lane 1863-1893: 2007c–2008a), etc. all of which would be appropriate to the oasis of al-ʿUlā. Line 5. Parts of this line have been damaged, but all but two letters are clear.
