Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus: TEXT Line 2. Abū l-Ḥasan: [ʾṭ]ll rather than [ʾẓ]ll. Line 3. Abū l-Ḥasan: mw rather than [ʾ]gw; Sima: [h]gw for [ʾ]gw. TRANSLATION Line 2. [ʾ][ẓ]ll, Sima: '(he) covered (the subterranean water-channel)'. Line 3. bʿd, Sima: 'in the direction of'. DISCUSSION Hidalgo-Chacón Díez 2014: 18, for the place name Ṯr. Commentary: The verb ʾgw is very common in the Dadanitic inscriptions from al-ʿUḏayb. It is strange nevertheless that this verb occurs at the same time that the verb ʾẓll and in the place where a noun would be expected. Line 2. The verb [ʾ][ẓ]ll means "he performed the ẓll-ceremony", the exact nature of which we do not know. Usually, but not always, this verb is followed by the noun h-ẓll meaning "the ẓll-ceremony". Thus, [ʾ][ẓ]ll and [ʾ][ẓ]ll h-ẓll both mean "he performed the ẓll-ceremony".
