Interpretation

Commentary

ʿyrThis verb is likely a variant of the verb ġyr 'to grant a bloodwit', also the noun, ġyrt (Lane, 2316). It reflects the marginal sound change in Safaitic, ġ > ʿ.

mṭrThis could refer to the lineage of mṭr, which appears to be a clan of the ʾāl ṣabāḥ, a lineage group mentioned a few times in the inscriptions mainly as antagonists. A man of this lineage produced a bilingual Safaitic-Greek inscription: (BES19s 3). The m of the second mṭr is carved in a rather tight way, causing it to resemble a b. However, the earlier mṭr assures that its first glyph is simply a poorly carved m.
