Interpretation
- Commentary
The first part of this genealogy is lost due to a rough patch on the stone where writing is not possible or made difficult.
The term hwt is attested for the first time here and is interpreted, faute de mieux, as a toponym.
This rough surface on the stone prevented the writer from continuing after "the year of" in the later part of their inscription. Before the rough area on the stone, following "in the year of", there appears to be an {r} before the gap in the inscription. Context movitates us to restore the regnal name as rbʾl, which could refer to Rabbel I (r. 85/84 BC) or Rabbel Soter II (r. 70/71 to 106 AD). The latter king is much more likely as he has appeared previously in the dating formulae of Safaitic inscriptions. We cannot, however, know whether the writer intended the king's accession or death, so a more precise date is not possible.
