Al-Jallad, et al. 2020: εσραθ for εγρψεε.
- Commentary
The original reading of εσραθ was based on the poor quality photographs provided by the original field collectors. The inscription was redocumented by Al-Jallad (BES19s mission), which produced high resolution images and the possibilty of studying the text on the rock. This resulted in the correct reading provided in Al-Jallad 2022c.
The Greek transcribes the name ẓʿn bn kḥs¹mn, the same man who authored AGK 3 and probably 1. The Greek verb is garbled. He is clearly attempting to write the 3rd singular aorist ἔγραψε, but omits the Alpha between the Rho and Psi and then attempts to turn the final Epsilon into an Alpha. Realizing this is impossible, he lightly scratches the Epsilon again.
