Interpretation

Commentary
The meaning of h- ṣfrt here is uncertain. The translation provided assumes the term is similar to the Classical Arabic al-ṣufārah, yellow and withered plants (Hava 391b). An alternative translation might be ‘the year of the hunger’, following a parallel with the Classical Arabic ṣafrah, hunger/emptiness of the stomach. Josef Bloomfield
