Interpretation

Commentary

b- s²ḥrt: The first line, which is written horizontally across the top of the columns, contains what is probably a toponym introduced by the locative preposition b-. s²ḥrt corresonds to the name of the region today, śaḥrūt.

The following three terms are difficult to interpret. Klbt is a common Semitic name. Ġlṭm is attested for the first time with an m, but ġlṭ is attested in other instances. This could suggest that it is a substantive or a verb, perhaps 'to err', rather than a name. The following term ḥbdt is attested once more without the t as ḥbd, perhaps suggesting it too is a verb/substantive and not a name. The root is unknown in Arabic, Ethiopic, or South Arabian. The inscription is at the moment impossible to interpret.
