Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus

Hayajneh and Harahsheh 2025:

1st reading variant:
l gdy w-rʿy ---- {w}{ġ}{m}{r}{ġ} f-wʾl mn mḥlt
By Gdy and he pastured ….. {w}{ġ}{m}{r}{ġ}, so he escaped from the dearth of pasture.

2nd reading variant:
l gdy w-rʿy ---- {w}{ġ}{m}{r}{ġ}f w-ʾlmn mḥlt

By Gdy and he pastured ….. {w}{ġ}{m}{r}{ġ}f, and he (?) ʾlmn mḥlt

Commentary

The final phrase could also be parsed as ʾlmn mḥlt, as suggested in reading 2 of the editio princeps, meaning 'he sought refuge during a time of dearth'. On ʾlmn, see Al-Jallad 2025f.
