Interpretation

Commentary

The script is uncertain and its unknown provenance further complicates a classification. It closely resembles Safaitic, but the shape of the is anomalous. The m of the verb ktm also has an unexpected shape, but this is surely the result of trying to correct a w, which the author wrote mistakenly. The vocabulary is typical of the ANA inscriptions of North Arabia, including Safaitic, but also of Ḥimaitic. One point of incongruence is the formulaic structure. The inscription does not begin with the lām auctōris and there is no conjunction between the name of the author and the main verb, distinguishing it from the Safaitic writing tradition as a whole and specifically that of the ʿArʿar region.
