BES25_MG1 28

The narrative of this inscription contains an unformulaic statement illustrating the relationship between Bʿls¹mn and percipitation. The author describes the storm god as being greedy, perhaps indicating that the rains were few or delayed entirely. The inscription appears to be by the grandson of the military commander Ẓnn son of Kḥs¹mn, mentioned in a number of inscripitons (AGK 1; BES25_MG1 27.4; see Al-Jallad 2022c).

ts²rh: This verb is cognate with Classical Arabic šariha ʿalā/ʾilā 'to be greedy (of the food)' (Lane, 1544a). The Safaitic verb must reflect a T2-stem, perhaps /taśarraha/. 

l-mnḍ: While šariha takes an object introduced by ʾilā, the Safaitic cognate appears to introduce the object with l-. The stroke is longer than the following n but shorter than the l carved previously on this line. Reading it as an n, however, would produce nothing sensible. The m appears to have an intersecting line, but this should be understood as a horizontal chip. It has a very different shape than the w that is carved a few glyphs later and most closely resembles the m of kḥs¹mn above. The word mnḍ is a noun with an m-preformative, perhaps /manāḍḍ/, cognate with Classical Arabic naḍḍa 'to drip, flow little by little'; naḍīḍun 'a small quantity of water' (Lane, 2803-4).
