Interpretation

Commentary

One of the rare inscriptions carved by a man of Ṭayyiʾ, an outside people from North Arabia who were regarded as enemies by the tribes of the Ḥarrah. The author of BES15 745 identifies himself using the gentilic form h-ṭʾy 'the Ṭayyite'.

ḫṯm: This name was carved with some hesistation. The ḫ-glyph is clear but there are some scratches beneath it suggesting that the author made a failed first attempt. Ḫṯm is not previously attested in Safaitic, which is explainable by the fact that the author was not a local.
