Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus: Littmann in Field 1952: 36 (and fig. 21): l ys²m bn mṭl h- ʿr "By Ys²m son of Mṭl was drawn the wild ass". This was corrected in Stehle 1960: 1, on the basis of a letter from Littmann to Field, to: "By Ys¹lm son of Mṭl (was captured) the wild ass". Ryckmans G 1955: 8: ys¹lm
Commentary: See Macdonald (in press, a) for the reasons for translating ʿ(y)r in Safaitic as a hybrid, that is a "mule" (the offspring of a male donkey x female horse) or a "hinny" (the offspring of a male horse x female donkey).
