Interpretation

Commentary
This was published as WH 2833 a. For ṣbḥ as "he made a sudden attack (in the morning)" see Lane ṣabaḥa "he made a predatory or hostile attack in the morning" (Lane p. 1640c) and yawm al-ṣabāḥi "the day of a hostile or predatory incursion" (Lane p. 1642c). Müller 1980: 73 suggests that ʾftnyʾ represents the Greek name Ἀφθόνιος. For hmlk compare Palmyrene mlkʾ and for ḥrḍ compare Palmyrene ḥrwṣ (Stark 1971: 32 and 23 respectively).

Provenance
WH Cairn 37 and this inscription were rediscovered and photographed by the Badia Epigraphic Survey in 2018 and the co-ordinates given are exact.
