Interpretation

Commentary: The inscription begins on the right side of the stone, below the stomach of a horse. There is a longer straight line above the letter read as a lām auctoris here. This letter seems to be extraneous as a name nms¹k would be unexpected. The second and potentially third names were carved almost entirely upon a region of the stone that has broken away and therefore only the tops of the letters are visible. The first letter could potentially be a h, ṣ, or ʾ. The second could be a ḅ or ṛ. The reading of a r is based upon the larger r in frʾ, when compared with the smaller b of bn. The reading here then assumes that following the apparent r, a bn has entirely broken away from the stone. Whilst there is not much space between the r and the next visible letter, the bn before frʾ could fit into the gap. The next visible letter, here read as ṣ, could potentially be a y or ṣ. The next letter could be a f, ġ, or potentially a small b. The next letter could be a l, y, h, z, or ġ. Josef Bloomfield
