- Commentary
The first word must be read as s¹fʿ, which can be compared with Classical Arabic safaʿa 'to blacken', 'to mark with fire'. The sense of "to blacken" meaning "to curse" is well attested in Arabic and so it is possible to interpret this short text as a curse. Less likely is a connection with Aramaic šəpaʿ 'to flow' or šappeʿ 'to make flow down'. While this second sense is related to abundance, cf. Hebrew šipʿâ, a verb meaning 'to bestow abundance upon' would likely require an object introduced by a preposition. The second sequence of three glyphs forms the name of the Arabian deity manāf, a divine title meaning 'exalted' or 'high'. This divine title/name is relatively rare in the ANA inscriptions; it has appeared before in Thamudic B and D from northwest Arabia, as Zeus Manaphos in a Greek inscription from the Hawran, and is attested as a theophoric element in a Paleo-Arabic theophoric name in the Zebed inscription. The object of Manāf's curse is the personal name hgr, a female anthroponym attested a couple of times in the ANA corpus, e.g. see here. The name is cognate with or perhaps the equivalent of Hebrew הָגָר hāgār, the handmaid of Sarah in Genesis.
