Interpretation

Commentary
The inscription is relatively clear on the stone, but due to blurring in the photographs, it is not possible to read in a certain manner. Nevertheless, the reading presented is almost certain, given a clearer reading of the author’s father’s genealogy is present on the same stone (BES20 427). Compare with genealogies attested in ASWS 328 (ʾnʿm bn ys¹mʿl bn yṯʿt bn ntn bn ḥwrn) and AAWHA 122 (ḥyn bn ʾnʿm bn ys¹mʿl). It seems likely that ASWS 328 presents a misreading of the name ntn. In the sketch, the author seems to draw a t above the second letter. Nevertheless, in this inscription, there is clearly no t. A reading of nl is clear in BES20 427, additionally a yṯʿt bn nl is attested in a number of other inscriptions (ZMMS 65; KRS 1917, 1919; C 1410). Note also that a yṯʿt bn ll bn ḥwrn is also attested (RWQ 332). Josef Bloomfield
