Interpretation

Apparatus Criticus

CGSP 1: l ʾtrt compares the name to divine name ʾṯrt in Qatabanic. M.C.A. Macdonald read ʾtbt or if the bottom right stroke is doubtful then the second letter should be read k and the name read as ktbt, MNH p. 311 n. 50: on inscriptions found within settlements.

Commentary

The new photographs of Al-Jallad confirm that the reading of the inscription is ktbt, to be compared with the common Arabic name kutaybah. The name is extremely rare in ANA, attested only thrice in Hismaic (OCIANA, 30/12/2024).

CGSP p. 1: "at a distance of 5m 92 from the entrance on the via Stabiana almost opposite the two doorways which lead to the upper cavea of the small theatre".
