Interpretation

Commentary

The first and last signs in this apparently four-letter inscription along the bottom edge are uncertain. The vertical segment of the first seems too short to be l but too long to be n, yet the whole line is written in a smaller hand than the five accompanying texts. The last sign, despite having the boomerang shape of bs elsewhere on this rock face, doesn't seem to fit, as the root ġ-ṯ-b seems to be unattested in both Safaitic and Classical Arabic. It's as though the author began to write his genealogy but stopped abruptly, with no ostensible space constraints. The text is best interpreted as an unfinished inscription, containing the very common name ġṯ /ġawṯ/ and the first letter of bn
