The sons of Wrd, the dead man buried in the cairn, engaged in a separate activity at the burial, signalled by the verb ḥf. The verb takes a direct object, namely, the dead man, and so I would suggest interpreting it along the lines of Classical Arabic ḥaffa-hū bi-š-šayʾ 'he surrounded it with a thing' (Lane, 597b). In the context of a burial, this likely refers to the son's bearing the responsibility of burying their father, that is, enclosing him in the grave, perhaps 'surrounding' him with dirt and stones.
